Keeping Your Dentures Clean

Posted .

Dentures are an easy and inexpensive way to replace your missing teeth. Although they are not your natural teeth, they still need regular care and cleaning to make certain that they serve you well.

Dentures need to be cleaned at least once a day. There are special cleaners formulated for dentures, but do not use regular toothpaste, since the toothpaste may contain abrasives that can damage your dentures. You can also use dish soap or hand soap and warm water. Do not use hot water as it may warp your dentures. You can gently scrub your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush or with a toothbrush made for cleaning your dentures. When you clean your dentures, do so over a sink filled with water or over a towel; that will lessen the chances that your dentures will break if you drop them.

You should take your dentures out at night and leave them in a denture-soaking solution. Your dentures should never be allowed to dry out since that could cause them to lose their shape.

If your dentures do break, gather the pieces together and call your dentist. Do not try to repair them on your own. Regular glues and adhesives can contain chemicals that can be harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Your dentist can repair your dentures and if necessary, replace them.
